This is for you lower ele teachers, to an extent...

Anyone tend to notice a correlation of the number of students on Yellow/Red versus the amount of sleep you've received on any given day?

I haven't been going to bed quite as early since we got back from our last break as I did when I first started this long term gig & I've had quite an abundance of "wall flowers"  at recess lately (those on yellow/red when we go out sit on the wall for 5/10+ minutes depending on their 'offense'). I'm wondering if that's related to my patience due to lack of sleep, or due to that last break being so close to school actually being out.

Any comments/similar observations from anyone out there?

PS: I only have 18.5 more teaching days! Is it sad that I started the countdown when I started this longterm?!? (Mind you, I did sub throughout 3 districts almost every day this year prior to taking the longterm...but subbing didn't bring home ANY of this paperwork/planning so it didn't really require a countdown).

12th grade English/Lit teachers - whatcha teachin'?
Hi everybody,

I have an assignment for one of my classes, and I was trying to think what 12th grade English/Lit teachers might be teaching at the end of the year (I haven't had a chance to do classroom observation lately).

What kinds of things are you covering as the year comes to a close?

Just curious!

Thanks for a response.

All my eggs so far...
I had an interview at my top choice of schools (my alma mater) last Tuesday. The Assistant Principal said she would get back to me by the first of the following week (which would be today) about whether or not they were interested in hiring me. I'm posting this at about 1 PM and their school ends at 2:10 PM. I'm getting a little antsy. Should I call? Email? Just wait some more?

Accepted a job offer!
I just accepted a job offer and wanted to share my joy and excitement! I asked a few days ago for opinions on teaching 4 English preps. Well, as it turns out, another school offered me the same salary with a signing bonus and only 2 preps.

The latter has great benefits, a retirement plan, a beautiful outdoorsy campus, focused and ambitious teachers, and (from what I saw) motivated and talented students. I feel like planning will be a challenge, but not because of the sheer amount of work, but because of the high standards and great students.

It's like a dream job! I'm thanking God for the great opportunity! Thank you all as well for your helpful thoughts and advice throughout my job search :)

I am trying a classroom managment technique that my co-op teacher told me about. Each table (I'm in kindergarten) is called a Team. There are 4 teams. Each time a teach does something good, like finishes their work on time, doesn't talk, etc. I put a sticker next to thei team name. At the end of the week, whichever team has the most stickers gets to be first for everything the following week. Such as line up first, go to the bathroom first, drinks first. What do I do with that one child who has a hard time staying focused, talks alot, doesn't finish his work and ruins it for his team? We have already referred this child and the Child Study Team is evaluating him.

Movie selection comments..
I was wondering if anyone had comments/suggestions on showing "I am Legend" to my 8th graders. I teach science and thought it might be interesting since the main character is attempting to find cures and alter DNA etc... I wasn't concerned until my colleague called me tonight and said "Have you seen this movie?" She was concerned they mention God and that it has some gross scenes. It is rated PG-13 and although they might mention the word "God" I do not think it has any significance in the movie itself. I am supposed to show it tomorrow, so any comments are appreciated in case I have to change my mind between now and then... :) Thanks!

Random question
Ever have a student who eats things?  I'm pretty sure he's just doing it for attention, but it seems he can't keep ANYTHING out of his mouth.

He took a test a few weeks ago and when he turned it in, there was a part ripped off.  I jokingly asked if he wrote a note to someone and he said no, he ate it.

He usually sticks to things like paper and chewing on pen caps and pencil erasers, but lately he started eating staples (or at least putting them into his mouth.  I'm pretty sure he's only done that twice and I've caught him both times).

He wants to eat paper, fine, as long as he's not turning that paper into spitballs whatever.  But the staples worry me.  He could swallow one and it could like cut up something inside of him and do some serious damage.  Who saw that episode of House where the kid swallowed a toothpick and it pierced his intestines and caused lots of damage?  Now imagine what a METAL STAPLE could do.

So how can I get him to stop putting, oh, EVERYTHING HE SEES in his mouth?

He's... he's 17.

Vocabulary Site
I found this site through a Yahoo News Story:

www.freerice.com

The site adjusts to the player's level (so ANYONE can play it... I tried testing it by answering questions wrong, then got it back up to my level) and automatically logs free rice donations to end hunger. Rice is funded by ads on the bottom... which is the only problem I can forsee... don't let the kids click on the bottom! :)

It's a great thing to do when students finish early, and since it constantly adjusts to skill levels, it can be left on and daily class totals can be recorded. Classes can even compete for the highest totals!

Can't wait to try it in my own class next fall, I'm subbing now! :)

Why My Mum is the Most Rockin Muttha Ever

Originally published at www.pruesaysit.com. Please leave any comments there.

1. She laughs at fart jokes. And I mean, really heartily laughs. Sometimes she laughs so hard that tears stream down her face. How can you not love that?

2. She dances like Mick Jagger. It doesn’t matter where mum is, or what she’s wearing… if she hears the intro riffs to Satisfaction, she begins to morph into Mick Jagger. Her lips get all pouty and big, she pulls her head into her neck, her jaw locks up and her eyebrow rises up slightly and she struts up and down and around in circles. I’ve seen her do this naked at home, clothed at the shops, in the car… She rocks out as the Jagman.

3. Sometimes, when she’s lost her mind completely, she’ll pull her jumper over her head and scream “bunghole, bunghole, aoijaslkdjafosijdlakjsldkj” Then she laughs and says how much she enjoys the “Itchy and Scratchy Bum” show…. Lucky for me, I can decipher that she means she likes “Beavis and Butthead”.

4. If you need advice, she’s got some. And you can ask her about anything. My friends regularly come to her for all kinds of advice, but mostly for the sex and love kinda stuff. I love that she always had advice for people, but never in that pushy shove it in your face way.

5. She will whip your arse at Trivial Pursuit.

6. She Blogs!

7. She knows the backstory to just about everyone I’m friends with online and remembers your names! That says 2 things… one; Geekiness is a generic trait and two: we’re both legends with too much time on our hands

8. She doesn’t totally hate the idea of the “MAMA” tattoo I want!

9. She’s always on my side, regardless of the situation. That’s fierce. I love that about her!

10. She always makes me laugh… even when we’re driving eachother insane, we laugh.

mawsy

Happy Mothers Day Mama.
Rock out with your Cock out.

Suggestions?
It's me again, the 2nd grade long-term sub,  needing suggestions...

Background: This week we have a big Michigan Fair on Wednesday (it's like a science fair, only Soc St projects related to Michigan) after school, plus half days THU & FRI thanks to teacher-y things. I'm also wrapping up our fractions chapter & reviewing Monday & testing Tuesday. I want to show a movie after the test on TUE (I'll have like an hour-ish) & continue it Wed afternoon, since starting a new math chapter is pointless til the following week.

My thoughts: We are into our third story in our "That's Incredible" unit in our reading series (Story #1 "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash", #2 "What Happened to Patrick's Dinosaurs", #3 "An Octopus is Amazing"). Tuesday AM, we are going to start a creative writing project I'm calling "That's Incredible" Teamwork Stories". We are going to discuss in depth what incredible means, I'm going to read a few very short "Incredible" stories, then I'm going to start 1 line of a story on the overhead & have different students add to the story. To wrap it up, I'll have each student write an opening line to an "incredible" story & collect the papers (no names on them, either...maybe just initials on the back or something so I can keep track...I'm not sure yet). Then on like THU or FRI, when we have some extra time, I'll shuffle the stack, pass them back randomly & have the students write line 2, line 3, etc just to see what we come up with. Once they are done the following week, I'll pass them back randomly once more & have students neatly copy 1 story each onto "Special" paper (in cursive, since we finish capitals next week & will be reviewing the following week & most of my boys write surprisingly better in cursive than print...isn't that odd?) & we'll put them in the hall somewhere.

My Question: Can anyone think of a 2nd grade-ish appropriate movie with an "Incredible" plot that we could watch on Tues/Wed during my extra time. At this time of night, I cannot think of anything & thought I'd post some thoughts here.

Also, any feedback to my created lesson would be great, too!

Thanks & Happy Mother's Day to any moms out there. I'm not one, but we made an awesome "gift" that I hope the moms of my students appreciate tomorrow!

PS...I appologize for any typos...it's late, I'm super tired, but my grandma fed me caffeine when I visited her & I'm still super hyper! =D

Blogging
How many of you blog about your teaching experiences? I already subscribe to a few nice teaching blogs, but I'm always looking for more to gain a wider perspective of ideas, frustrations, and day-to-day life in the career. As a pre-service teacher, I don't have much to say yet, but I plan to start a blog over the summer as I prepare and (hopefully!) start teaching in the fall. I encourage you to post a link to your blog in the comments.

Also, if you subscribe to any blogs, please post them as well!

50 States Read-Alouds
Salutations! Well, I'm just all flustered because a while ago I found a fantastic Web site that had 50 read-alouds (some chapter books, some picture books), one set in each of the 50 states, that could be used as a supplement to teaching U.S. history in 5th grade. I thought it was a neat list, but had no real use for it at the time (I'm a 3rd/4th looping teacher).

Now, I really, really want that list. And I can't find it, despite my mad Google skillz. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or have a list of their own they'd be willing to share?

Thanks in advance!

Just a question - this is to do with a research project for my PGCE training....  I am in the UK, but would be interested to hear how  people other countries may also find this question, and thier answers or thoughts.

My project is examining how involvement in community activities can lead to both basic and higher level training and study, for adults who maybe flunked school in thier childhood. I have a couple of local case studies - people I know who have agreed to participate, who are in this situation of currently progressing from few/no educational qualifications, to new courses, which have accepted them on the basis of thier experince in the relevant subjects, gained through community projects and clubs. This of course links directly into APEL  (http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/student-handbook/apel.cfm). But I was interested to hear how this may work (or not) in other countries, as extra reference.

Thanks :)

I did indeed get the job offer, but unfortunately the compensation was much lower than I expected and I am worried I simply can't afford it. I asked one person here this question in comments, but I wanted to ask on a broader scale:

Has anyone here successfully negotiated a pay increase for a job offer? What did you say? Do you have any advice? I'd also love to hear from private school teachers (those who are willing to share) what your starting salary was and where you are geographically. It's almost impossible to find info on private teaching salaries online. Thanks!

here is the offer )

For all of you employed teachers out there -- how does your personal time off work? I mean, clearly you wouldn't take two weeks off in the middle of the school year for a vacation, but how does it work if you had something you need a day off for or an extended weekend?  I come from the business world, so I'm used to vacation and sick days....

Teaching multiple grade levels
Just got a phone call from the school where I taught a sample lesson yesterday (for my interview process). The middle school administrator said they were impressed with me and the candidate who was there interviewing for 6th grade, J. They were wondering about the possibility of teaming us, so instead of me teaching 7th/8th grade English and History and J teaching 5th and 6th grade (that was the original plan), I would teach 5th-8th grade English and she would teach 5th-8th grade History.

At first I was worried about the 4 grade levels, but actually, it's the same number of preps as the original plan except all in the same subject area, where tools and teaching techniques will overlap. Also, my background is in English and I have no experience with History. So I'm excited about the possibility! It sounded very, very likely that they were going to make me an official offer within the next couple of days.

What do you think about teaching 4 grade levels of English?

Job Openings
Hey everyone

I'm in the process of hiring people for my school for next year. We're looking for some SPED teachers so if you are looking for a job and are interested in teaching urban youth in a nice small setting let me know. I definitely need some good candidates and the people I've seen through here are great!

The position is a middle school charter school in Boston, MA.

Seriously...?
LAND 'O LAKES, Fla. -- A substitute teacher in Pasco County has lost his job after being accused of wizardry.

Teacher Jim Piculas does a magic trick where a toothpick disappears and then reappears.

Piculas recently did the 30-second trick in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes.

Piculas said he then got a call from the supervisor of teachers, saying he'd been accused of wizardry.

"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue, you can't take any more assignments you need to come in right away,'" he said.

Piculas said he did not know f [sic] any other accusations that would have led to the action.

The teacher said he is concerned that the incident may prevent him from getting future jobs.

Seriously, Florida? You're serious about this? "Wizardry," fer cryin' out loud??

Arrrrgh.

I'd like to share an interesting interview question I got the other day. Perhaps it will give those of you who are currently interviewing (like I am) something to think about so that it doesn't take you by surprise.

How would you use blogging in your classroom?

Probably x-posted to fl_teachers and frenchteacher.

Fuck Landlords In The Arse

Originally published at www.pruesaysit.com. Please leave any comments there.

I feel like shit at the moment. I have this cold/flu thing that has been circulating amongst my friends and it’s totally wiped me out. All I’ve wanted to do is sleep…yes, even more than usual. People always look at me strangely when I say this, but surely I’m not the only person who’s skin hurts when they are unwell? Like, my skin is so sensitive and it aches so badly when I’m crook, but every time I’ve told people that they look at me like I’m the Bearded Lady’s even beardier and more portly conjoined twin. I just get that “WTF?” look.

If I wasn’t feeling so average, I’d be excited to tell you that we finally got a heater today! Yeah, so it took 6 months to come but it’s here…I think they were hoping we’d have left before they had to actually replace it. But at the rate we’re going, we could be here right up until the last possible day. Rental inspections are at ridiculous times like 1.40pm-1.50pm on a Monday, so it’s hard for everyone to see the properties, and even if they have been suitable, landlords can be so fussy now that they don’t take the first eligible applicant…they can pick and chose exactly who they want coz demand outweighs supply. It’s insane. The prices we’re looking at paying are twice what it would have cost a year or 2 ago. Shithouse.

Anyway, that’s about all I can tell you at the moment. I’m too knackered to write about anything else tonight. Stay tuned.
